Martha Stewart is one of the top voices in entertaining, and her latest ‘Martha Stewart’s Appetizers’ is no exception. From dips to toasts, crudités to ceviche- Martha has put together the new standard on appetizers and hors d’oeuvres. The whole book lends itself to Martha’s stylish simplicity- with simple, approachable recipes and clean styling when it comes to photos and design. Every recipe feels like it’s been served at a party you’ve been at before (By the way, Martha- where’s my invite?), yet Stewart’s team provides a refreshing new authority with serving tips and helpful recipe notes.
We start with small, sharable snacks like popcorn and salsa with chips, then move into starters that can be put together for a full tapas-style meal. The book then goes into the ‘Stylish Bites’ section, featuring ‘fancier’ appetizers like canapés and caviar. The white, grey, and marble style accents even the playing field for all recipes, from the more refined Croque-Monsieur Bites to the more homestyle Green Goddess Dip- I don’t feel intimidated by the traditional party menu when the recipes are situated next to Deviled Eggs. The final cocktail section rounds out the book perfectly, as no party is complete without the drinks. My personal favorites are the giant punch bowls filled with Adult-friendly concoctions with floating ice balls and fruit, ideal for a crowd.
I’d love to have a Gin-and-Grapefruit Fizz at Martha’s next event (because I totally need an invite to anything Martha-related)- we will eat Mini Quiches and talk about how peonies are so 2014 and how giant punch bowls are a mustfor anybody who entertains. We’d swap party hosting stories and eat gougeres straight from the oven… My crazy fantasies all stem from the reality that Martha Stewart’s book, in reality, is a supreme cookbook that makes me want to host a party right now. Pick up this book for anyone who enjoys having friends and family over often, or even someone looking for classy party ideas to get the pigs-in-a-blanket off the table. Simple recipes, styling, and approachability make this book perfect for anyone looking for a variety of ideas for simply stunning appetizers and small bites.
